Bude County Grammar Reunion - Monday 3rd AUGUST 2015

A fine time was had at the Falcon Hotel who truly pulled out all of the stops to produce a wonderful sign which, without doubt, sums up the benefits of a Grammar School education!Falcon Hotel Welcome Sign

Feedback says that the reunion was a tremendous success and, to be fair, the catering by the Falcon was superb even if their spelling didn't come up to scratch. 115 of the 120 booked, enjoyed the event with the other five having to cancel at the last minute for personal or family reasons. In addition Gaye and Stuart Adcock managed to turn up to join the main throng after the meal which was excellent. Woolacotts provided a giant television for us upon which a continual progression of ancient photographs of the school, its pupils and staff progressed.

I took a number of photographs of the tables during the event and would appreciate help naming everyone. It would be good to put the names in order from left to right in each photograph. Please let me have any pictures you took at the event. Did anyone photograph me? LOL. I've added names from the table lists, but they need to be put in order of left to right to make any sense for families searching this site in the decades to come. Help appreciated. Each image opens when clicked upon to give you the bigger version. You'll find the images below the menu.

With one or two last minute cancellations and donations, we managed to give over £80 to the Bude Surf Live-Saving Association.

Beneath the images you'll find some letters from individuals about the event.

25th December 2015 - someone's having a dull Christmas Day to be sending emails!!!

Hi Tony and Wendy

I've been meaning to say a huge Thank you for organising the school re-union back in August ever since we arrived back home but have kept putting it off and putting it off - however I want you to know that Eileen and I had an absolutely splendid time and I sincerely hope that I'm not the only one to be expressing my gratitude for the time and effort that it must have taken in order to get it together.

Will we see another one in the near future? Well - I'd like to think so but I couldn't be doing with the organising of it.

Anyway along with our grateful thanks we wish you both a very Merry Christmas.

Kind regards -

Dave and Eileen Gilbert

21st August 2015

Hello Tony,

Rather think you are back home again now after the School Reunion, didn't it go off well - of course thanks to you for the fantastic arrangements. I have heard lots of complimentary remarks.

I wondered whether you would like me to send you the report of Vi's funeral (as in the Cornish and Devon - local paper) if so I can put it in the post but could you please let me have your address as I am not sure if I have it tucked away somewhere safe! [Thanks to Jackie, I now have the Vi Wright details and there is a section under Teachers in the right index. Ed.]

I think the better weather was in Scotland today, we have had an unsettled day here and now rain set in possibly for the night.

Perhaps next time you are down we will try and fix for you both to come for a coffee, we didn't seem to have time to do it this time, also I don't think I even had a chance to speak to you or Wendy at the Reunion we were all busy chatting to people. Well must be off now

Best wishes to you

Jackie Adams

It is amazing how quickly that afternoon went. Ed.

Hi Tony

I just wanted to say thank you for all the time and effort you put in to making the reunion on 3rd August such a success.

I really enjoyed meeting everyone again after such a long time,

Kind Regards

Anne Chad

Tony

Fantastic day – really enjoyed it and one always learns what other people (and pasties) were like and viewed by others when they are older!

Great food and very good venue as always – well done

Nick Barnard

Hello Wendy and Tony,

Thank you for your efforts in making the Re-union a great success. We were approached by former Students: many we did not recognise and it was very interesting to hear what they had done since leaving Bude CGS. We had a very enjoyable and interesting afternoon.

We would like to get in contact with Steve Brown to thank for the wine – do you have his e-mail address? [Sent. Ed.]

Best Wishes,

Jean and Arthur Harris

Hi Tony

I want to say a massive thankyou for organising the reunion held last Monday. I thought it went off brilliantly - lovely atmosphere - everyone so happy to be there.

I must admit to being very nervous that same morning - could have easily cried off.

Thanks to Wendy too.

I thought the way we secured our tickets was useful - nice to know in advance who was on the same table.

Hope you enjoyed your stay in Bude.

Loved the photos you took. Makes you fall in love with Bude all over again.

Warm regards

Sandra Bailey (Sluggett)

[This message came through facebook where I had posted a lot of our images from our holiday after the reunion. If anyone wants to see them, you can on this link even if you are not on facebook, the only problem being that they crop them on the link, but if you click on them you can see the full version. Might be nice for those who rarely get to Bude. Ed.]

Many thanks Tony for organising the re-union, we so thoroughly enjoyed it.

6th August 2015

Hello Tony

Can I just say it was a pleasure to attend the reunion on Monday and catch up with so many people that I'd frankly lost touch with in forty plus years....... there were many who I'd not spoken to since 1996, the last one I attended, purely because I rarely get up to Bude. On Tuesday morning I spent a bit of time visiting places that had changed very little but still responded with fond memories. I promise to all those I reminisced with that so long will not pass again before we meet!

Best wishes and thanks for an excellent day

Malcolm Townrow

6th August 2015

Hi Tony,

Many thanks for all your efforts towards an excellent reunion last Monday. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting "old" faces and wondering where the time has gone.

I will now have a search through my archives and see if I can come up with anything else for the website. An interesting project. Would you mind passing my e-mail details to Roger Hunter please. We forgot to exchange details on the day. I would like to speak to him again regarding our collections of memorabilia.

Thanks again Tony, we will be in touch.

Adrian Abbott

5th August 2015

Dear Tony and Wendy,

Many many thanks for inviting Linda and me to your wonderful reunion. I enjoyed it greatly but was quite exhausted towards the end, but well worth the effort. It was overwhelming for me to meet so many of my old pupils.

Yours aye

Peter and Linda Ashworth.

4th August 2015

Dear Mr Harmsworth

I really feel I should complain to you about yesterday.

Firstly, I ate far more than my fair share of the buffet, and have probably put on pounds. Secondly, by 4pm I had no voice left after talking all afternoon and Thirdly - did 4pm (when I had to leave) really have to come round so quickly?

But seriously, Tony - it was a brilliant event, and you, Wendy and anyone else who helped organise it deserve our sincere thanks and congratulations for your efforts.

When can we do it again? I'll try not to leave before I've seen everyone next time!

Jane Cunio

4th August 2015

Dear Tony and Wendy

Just a note to thank you both for a splendid reunion on Monday for all those old boys (and girls!) of Bude Grammar from the last century!

These events do not happen without a huge amount of thought, planning and preparation and the success and enjoyment of the day was testament to all that. (and whilst you made me feel guilty my organisational skills are not in your league!)

It really was lovely to meet up with so many old school mates and reminisce, which brought back many fond memories and made me realise how fortunate we had been in our formative years.

I am not normally one to look back, but on this occasion a bit of nostalgia did not go amiss!

I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in Bude and have a safe journey back to Scotland.

Loch Ness is still on our agenda (not bucket list!) to visit so you never know.

Keep in touch and keep up the excellent work with the website.

Hopefully we will have time for at least one more reunion!!!

Many thank again.

Best wishes

Allan Vodden

4th August 2015

Hi Tony,

What a wonderful day we all had yesterday. Thank you so much for all your hard work.

I have been looking at the 1962 school photo again this morning and I think the unknown teacher to the left of Dianne McDougall [Gurd] is a french exchange teacher called Mademoiselle Meilleur. [ Hope I have spelt her surname correctly ] [Now amended on picture, Ed]

Many thanks once again for a lovely afternoon,

Lorna Cawthorne [ Adams ]

4th August 2015

Good morning Tony and Wendy

Just to say how much we both enjoyed yesterday – everybody we spoke to said how much they appreciated the day.

Well done for organising it all.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay at the Manor. A trip to Scotland is definitely in our five year plan!

Love from us both.

Peggy and Bill Whateley
